how well does the skid steering work?
is it any reliable at higher speeds?

Skid steering works well though it does take a little time to get used to it and you don't want to yank back on the stick too hard at speed unless you want to spin around, which is actually quite fun. The one problem with skid steering is that you lose half your traction when turning, so when dragging a heavy log sometimes the driving side doesn't have enough traction to make a turn. In that case I have to back up a bit and turn the machine where I want to go a few times before dragging the log. This only happened once so far, with a red oak log that was probably over 600lbs.
